Chem homework #3
- A physical property is a property that can be observed and measured without changing the chemical makeup of the substance.
- Three physical properties of water are the freezing point, boiling point, and density.
- The density of a liquid compares to the density of a solid because the density of a liquid tends to be less than the density of a solid.
- A setting where u might experience water in all three forms is in a warm pool during winter. The snow outside the pool is a solid form of water, while the water inside the pool is in its liquid state, and the steam coming from the pool is water in its gaseous state.
- Heterogeneous and homogenous mixtures are different because a homogenous mixture is uniform throughout where as a heterogeneous mixture is not.
- In order to figure out whether gas or water is going to be the liquid on top of the other a person needs to find the density of each because the litter density will float to the top.
- A medicine accompanied by instructions to “shake before using” is a suspension
b. Italian salad dressing is a suspension
c. Mayonnaise is a colloid
d. A cola soft drink is a solution
e. An oil-based paint is a suspension
f. Milk is a colloid
8. This demonstrates that the air in a room is a colloid because if you can see the beam of light the particles are big enough to reflect the light but small enough not to be seen. Where as if the air was a suspension it would be to cloudy and the beam would be blocked.
10. The mixture is a colloid because if the beam is visible then there are visible particles floating in the substance and because no particles settled on the bottom the particles are not big enough to be a suspension.
11. A substance has a uniform and definite composition and distinct properties. Each element and compound is considered a substance.
12. a. CO is a compound
b. Co is an element
c. HCI is a compound
d. Mg is an element
e. Na HCO3 is a compound
f. NO is a compound
g. I2 is an element
