Extra Credit "Solar Physics: Sun Down"

Many people have heard about and understand the magnitude of some of the sun’s more violent storms, in which solar flares erupt from the surface of the sun and interfere with radio signals and electric grids as the flares hit the Earth’s magnetic field, yet if Dr. Penn and Dr. Livingston are correct in their calculations this phenomenon may cease in the near future. In the article “Solar physics: Sun Down,” the two scientists’ data is revealed to the public. Dr.Hill was the scientist credited for the discovery of jet streams that appear on the Sun many years before the actual Sun storm (which can be seen through telescopes as dark spots where the temperature of the gas has lowered) these jet streams where predicted to appear in 2008 or 2009 yet no sign of their occurrence was observed or documented. According to Dr. Livingston and Dr. Penn, who have been analyzing the Sun’s periodic outbursts and storms for 13 years, this could mean that the a new extended solar minimum is going to begin in 2021. A couple of solar minimums have happened in the past and were recorded during times of cooler temperatures on Earth; though this may seem a disadvantage, the reduced solar flares and storms will have positive effects on communication satellites and global warming. A new solar minimum could possible lower and counter the effects of global warming until the solar cycle returns. Maybe some cooler days would not effect the human population as badly as the concept sounds.

Northern lights are the redirection of solar flares and storms to Earth's magnetic poles
